Bison Surveillance Continues

Since I set up my solar powered Raspberry Pi bison surveillance system over 9 years ago, it has been sending me hourly emails containing zipfiles full of photos of the bison and the rest of the ranch.  Recently I replaced the original Raspberry Pi with a new one and then decided it would be a good idea to try retrieving the photos from all the emails I had ever received.  I found a Python program online someone else had written, adapted it for my purposes, and then executed the program.  The program ran along merrily for about 24 hour downloading the photos until it was finished.  I then wrote a program to unzip and sort all of the photos and then I wrote another one to analyze them.

According to the analysis I had received 3,024 emails sending a total of 1,602,079 photos.  The above graph shows a plot of how many photos were sent each day during that time. The pattern of fluctuations you can see in the later part of the chart is do to a program I had added to scan each photo for a certain number of dark pixels and delete those photos (i.e. photos taken at night).  Winter days have longer nights which means less daily photos.  Pretty good for a little computer the size of a baseball card.
